DAISY

(FLIP)

DAISY is a Los Angeles based band that has been making self-proclaimed “music for kissing” since 2014 with no signs of slowing down. DAISY is fronted by the vibrant Daisy Hamel-Buffa alongside bassist Alex Kasvikis, keyboardist Ben Roswell Salk and Matthew “Rat” Fildey on guitar. Though one genre cannot box in the width that is DAISY, their sound has a distinctively pop feel blended with what the band has dubbed, “loud jazz” and “punk R&B,” demonstrated often through their usage of horns and bridges with characteristic tempo shifts.

DAISY released their first album, "Smoke About It," in 2016 and followed up with their second album, "Have A Snack," in 2019 which included the single, “Day Off,”  written in collaboration with Matt Martians of The Internet.

In May of 2019, Daisy Hamel-Buffa became the sole feature on Steve Lacy’s critically-praised debut album, Apollo XXI, where her dreamy voice shined on Lacy’s nearly ten minute track, “Like Me.”

In the fall of 2019, DAISY made their festival debut at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw where they were touted by Live Nation as “Ones To Watch” before even taking the stage. Now, nearly seven years into crafting “loud jazz” infused pop melodies as DAISY, the band is eagerly gearing up for the release of their newest project, due out in 2021, to show off the growth and maturation of their unique sound.

SAMMY RAE

“Because we come from so many different spaces and studies of music, we’re able to create something very unique,” Sammy states. “We learn from one another as we’re playing together. We’re grateful to have found people who speak the same language, but also speak their own. We have a vision for longevity. The only way that works is if we behave as a family. We’re all very grateful to have the support of one another. This is a large group of people where everyone plays an important role. It’s the lunch table Ialways wanted as a kid.”

During 2018, Sammy’s debut EP “The Good Life” caught fire. Along the way, the lineup: C-Bass Chiriboga (drums), James Quinlan (bass), Will Leet (guitar/keys), Myra Moon (backing vocals), Kaya Kulu (backing  vocals), Max Zooi (tenor  saxophone/synths) and Kellon Anderson (alto saxophone), crystallized, and The Friends rallied behind her at sold out shows in world-renowned venues.

While  the  band  considers  themselves  the  “eight  faces  of  The  Friends,”  they  advocate  for  the importance of their community. Avid music fans themselves, they pride themselves on this original grass-roots growth. The Friends consists of their community  of  followers,  artists  and creatives who help in the creation of their songs and sustenance of the project—their  mixing engineer,  band  photographer,  graphic  designer,  budget  manager,  and  everyone  who  hangs around the shows supporting the vision. Shows are safe spaces to feel overwhelmed with love and acceptance. SYDNEY SPRAGUE

(FLIP)

Sydney Sprague is making music for the end of the world.

The 29-year-old singer/songwriter, now a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, was encouraged by her parents to pursue songwriting early on in her life. She spent her formative years daydreaming alone in her room (decorated lovingly with Britney Spears and *NSYNC posters) and unknowingly incubating a talent that would ultimately lead to her future music career.

Backed by familiar-yet-surprising hooks and hard-hitting, topical lyrics, sprague’s songwriting continues to evolve. With eyes on contemporaries like her 90’s idols, notably Avril Lavigne, she flawlessly carries that same fire, creativity, and wit into her 2021 release, "maybe i will see you at the end of the world."

YVETTE YOUNG

(FLIP)

Yvette Young is the guitarist and writer for the band Covet. In addition to her band, she has a solo project where she plays piano, acoustic guitar, and violin. Yvette grew up classically trained in piano and violin and taught herself guitar while in the hospital. After completing a Fine Art and Visual Performing Arts education degree at UCLA, she worked as an art teacher awhile before transitioning to a full time musician. Because of her own personal experiences with using art and music as her own personal outlets, she is a huge advocate for music as a source of therapy and songwriting as a way to build self esteem and find a voice.

TANK AND THE BANGAS

Coming from New Orleans, Tank and the Bangas are surrounded by plenty of grand musical traditions. And the five-piece group has a rare knack for combining various musical styles—fiery soul, deft hip-hop, deep-groove R&B and subtle jazz—into one dazzling, cohesive whole that evokes the scope of New Orleans music while retaining a distinctive feel all its own.

“It’s music that can’t really be put in a box,” says singer and poet Tarriona “Tank” Ball. She fronts the band with vivid charisma that helped Tank and the Bangas win NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Concert Contest by unanimous acclaim, standing out among 6,000 entrants because of what Bob Boilen called “the depth of their lyricism and the versatility of their players.” Those same qualities also attracted the attention of Verve Records, which has signed the band.

Ball’s lyrical depth has been years in the making. She came up in the strong local slam poetry scene before meeting her bandmates: Merell Burkett on keyboards, Joshua Johnson on drums, Norman Spence on bass and synth keys and, eventually, Albert Allenback on alto sax and flute.     (FLIP)

“Growing up, I always could sing, but I wrote better than I sang, so I focused on writing,” she says. After her team won the National Poetry Slam Championship two years in a row, Ball turned her full attention to Tank and the Bangas.

What started as a loose collaboration at an open-mic night in 2011 has grown into a mesmerizing musical force that’s only picking up speed. After a featured set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival early in the band’s career, the musicians built a reputation outside their hometown by grinding it out on the road, honing their live show and releasing the 2013 album Think Tank, all the while converting audiences into passionate fans and garnering critical acclaim, from the New Orleans Advocate to The New York Times. “It made us work hard,” Ball says of playing Jazz Fest. “It made us want to feel deserving of it.”

Their hard work is paying off: The Huffington Post says Tank and the Bangas defy description onstage, adding, “It’s music that you have to experience.” The experience is subject to change from one night to the next.

Tank and the Bangas won the Tiny Desk contest with “Quick,” a riotous single they released in 2017 (and soon accompanied with a cheeky, not entirely safe-for-work video). There’s more new music where that came from as the group works on the follow-up to Think Tank. “It’s going to be awesome,” Ball says. “It’s going to be fun, and a little vulnerable at the same time.”
